Dames Of The Dargle

image

Well, this post is a little late to say the least. But life has been considerably chaotic at the moment – which is exactly why a little Midlands getaway, was exactly what I needed.

A couple weekends back, we “road tripped” up to my friend Emma’s incredible farm for a girls weekend complete with cheesy sing-alongs, gossip and wino.

Needless to say, we had a rather amazing time feeding the animals, picking strawberries, getting drunk in a field and kickin’ it country style. You can imagine how in my element I was with a calf and Em’s Motley Crew of hounds running around! On Saturday night, we were treated to a rather spectacular thunderstorm as well as killer pizzas from Il Postino – with me being the only weirdo who ordered a banana pizza. Man, it was good though and totally worth the teasing that followed. Girls are mean.

Here are a few happy snaps from our mini meander. I still get excited that fairytale places exist on our doorstep – KZN is one hella beautiful place!

Picture Day

image

So over the years I have had a growing fascination with photography.

From a budget camera to my phone to my pretty DSLR, I have taken thousands of pictures, documenting every moment and pretty scene I ever did saw – resulting in the familiar lines of “Oh Jenna will bring her camera” and “Enough with the photos Jenna” and then “Hey Jen, please can I get all those photos I wined about you taking the other day.” This year, for some reason I stopped taking as many pictures as usual, often electing to leave my camera behind to experience the moment or event in its entirety.

While this started off as a good idea, it also lead to me cutting back on something I may not be good at, but deeply love. To get inspired again, I’ve decided to start reposting some of my favourite snaps from the past few years, ranging from the embarrassing, to the raw, back to the over saturated and cringey to the ones I love for no explainable reason.

Never stop doing what you love.

JHB via iPhone

Hope you all had a righteous Human Right’s Day. For the long weekend, the boy and I travelled up country to JHB to watch the legend that is Frank Turner and spend some time with the bestest.

Dear Reader, Happy Valentines Day

It’s international day of romance!

It’s time for me to switch off my usually badass/gang$tarr disposition and have some real talk with ya’ll here for a second. You know it baby, turn the lights down low, crank up Mr Marvin Gaye and get ready for this.

(Friend, I am talking to you darling. And anyone else suffering from heartbreak today while the rest of the world prances around in red dresses with flailing arms and raining rose petals. I have seen too many breakups between lovely people lately.)

Love yourself. Deeply.

Respect yourself enough to know that you deserve the best kind of happiness.

You are worthy of passionate love. You are worthy of the best love.

Accept no less than the idea that you are a goddess and should be treated so.

Give up on your exes, but don’t ever give up on yourself. You hear me chile’?

This heartbreak – the tears and loss of appetite, are temporary my girl. It is but a page in a large chapter in a very convoluted story within in a very fat leather-bound book.

Fight for yourself each and every single day no matter how much you want to fight for them instead.

Know with full resolve that things will be ok. And in time, they’ll be wonderful.

You are going to find someone who loves you right down to the spaces in between your toes (and not in a weird fetish way)

Don’t change a thing.

You are strong. You are powerful. You are a phenomenal woman.

Put on lipstick, drink red wine and embrace that power.

I love you.

Throwback Thursday : This Morning

Here’s a post and some pics from 2011. Proud to say I still know this human, and could still rope him into an adventure.

this morning

After a night of insomnia I texted you to say lets do something crazy. So we met when the world was still asleep and headed off onto the highway. I told you I’d bring a flask and you wear your favourite shirt.

I told you my word for the year was “live” and you told me that your phrase was “have clear thoughts” and we took the long way to get there. We drove along the promenade and watched other people living too. I wore last night’s clothes and you played me that song.

The coffee was great and I told you that I’m taking a few pictures. We played on the sand ‘till the sun was fully out and the beach was crowded with gulls and pigeons. You found a pair of slops and I scooped up a hand full of shells.

We played around the empty restaurant tables and you stole a metal teapot. And a huge rock from the sand. I accepted your kleptomaniac tenancies.

We drove back home in the early light of the day and were home by 7am, having lived a full day before anyone else at home had gotten out of bed.

I think, you’re a cool friend.

You think the same about me, I know it.

Chronicles of Boys: The Break Up

We’ve all been there. More than once. Some are just a bump in the road while others hit you like Miley on a wrecking ball.

My last break-up sort of blindsided me. And I just thought that while I share all of the good stuff with you guys, it would be only fair to share some of the shit too. This is how I coped – and I hope that this will help others to cope too.

Let’s look at the steps I’ve been through thus far, shall we:

1. Overly Emotional Teenager

Tears. Sleepless nights. Self hate. Pure drama.

2. The Ultimate Diet: Break-Up Trauma

It’s pretty cool, I’ve lost a lot of weight on the plus side. Couple days of not eating, taking up chain smoking and giving up on sleep will do that to a girl. It’s a pretty impressive feat for a girl who LURHS her food.

3. Time To Get Drunked Up

Grab my mates. Crash a 21st. Wake up clutching a bowl of potato bake and half a broom. Independent sista doing it for herself. Look how much fun i’m having!

4. Overly Self Confident

Hey I can do this , it ain’t so bad, I got game. Hell, I’m freaking awesome man!

5. Wise Beyond My Years

Now that I have dealt with this in a mature manner, learnt some crazy life lessons and begun to look retrospectively on the past, I can blog about my life experiences, so that you, peasants, can learn from my mistakes and be awed at my ability to write so candidly about my personal life.

But seriously, here’s how I coped:

1. The best support network of fucking friends anyone has ever had, like, ever.

2. A lot of drives to nowhere.

3. A few packs of menthol and a million cups of coffee.

4. My mommy. Bless her and her unwavering strength.

5. A killer manicure.

6. Cuddles from pets.

7. A lot of Drake.Well, a lot more than usual.

8. Runs around the neighborhood.

9. Reading through old diaries and going through my Ex-Box. Reminds me how I got through so much, and can get through the rest.

10. A killer playlist – coming soon!

SA On Tap : Craft Beer Festival

There was beer. It was festive. The end.

Psych! This great little event brought all kinds of Durbanites to gather and drink the best in local brew with Darling Brewery’s Slow Beer taking home the Top Tap Award. I pretty much fulfilled all of my social duties in one day as I bumped into everyone and anyone I had ever known. The live music was my favourite part and a gourmet flat-bread never hurt anybody. Also trending was the beer pong and Royal Einsfield display.

A+B

Our lovely friends,Andrea and Bryan, got hitched yesterday on a perfect afternoon in Ballito.

5 and a half years of ups and downs, long distance and loving long time, they finally walked down the isle in a beautiful ,intimate garden ceremony. I teared up as soon as I saw Bryan, let alone the bride, who pretty much looked like perfection.

What followed was a night of too much food, too much booze ( peach bellini’s!) and a freak load of dancing and booty hopping with all the people I love.

I elected to leave my dear camera at home so I could relax and enjoy the evening,tech-free, but here are some snaps I stole from my friend’s one, that we all had picked up and used at some stage of the evening!

Weekend Away

Hello friendships!

I just had a rad weekend away that I felt I had to share as it is amazing what awesome places we can visit in KZN,with only a 1.5 hour drive.

My friends and I spent the weekend at Lesley’s holiday house in Notties,in the Midlands. What followed was a weekend of feet dragging in Uggs, the smell of last night’s fire and a lot of eating and singing.

On the first night, Kris made some Gluwein ( recipe coming soon) which warmed us up rather nicely. The next morning it was crumpets and sunshine. We lazed on the grass in warm patches of sunlight singing Third Eye Blind songs and dancing like loons. That afternoon we followed the Midlands Meander route, stopping for beer tasting and Austrian cuisine.

Really enjoyed a weekend of beanies and cuddles. Here are some of the snaps as of course I was glued to my camera. One of the people we went with only realized who I was when I had put my Canon up to my face!

Girl’s day out to Makaranga Gardens

image

image

I organized a little get together for my friends, so that they would finally have to make the trek up to my side of the world. Makaranga Lodge seemed like the perfect place as central Durbanites appear to be blissfully unawares about this magical location.

image

image

image

image

Makaranga has a guest lodge, pool spot ,deli, and restaurant. What more could you want or need?Makaranga has a distinctly quaint and rather posh vibe, given it’s situation in the affluent Kloof suburb.None the less ,families come to  play in the pool and the restaurant is prime for any occasion.

We ended up having such a beautiful day, sipping wine and savoring delicious food. Pizza, baked camembert, spatchcock chicken- you name it! I also happened to be starting a new job the following day so my dear friends bought me a bottle of pink champagne to toast the occasion. What a lovely slow Sunday afternoon, drinking and eating and laughing for three and a half hours!

image

image

After the day drunk buzz wore off, we headed to the deli and bought an assortment of cakes and cupcakes to accompany us as “padkos” for our garden walk. The gardens are really a sight to see! Eight different garden environments, including a woodland, japanese garden and cycad bed.We were in such a sunlight and champagne daze that we were admittedly rather tempted to nap under one of the leafy trees.

It really was one hell of a way to spend a Sunday, and we finished the afternoon back at my place for tea, coffee and biscuits.
