Picture Day

image

So over the years I have had a growing fascination with photography.

From a budget camera to my phone to my pretty DSLR, I have taken thousands of pictures, documenting every moment and pretty scene I ever did saw – resulting in the familiar lines of “Oh Jenna will bring her camera” and “Enough with the photos Jenna” and then “Hey Jen, please can I get all those photos I wined about you taking the other day.” This year, for some reason I stopped taking as many pictures as usual, often electing to leave my camera behind to experience the moment or event in its entirety.

While this started off as a good idea, it also lead to me cutting back on something I may not be good at, but deeply love. To get inspired again, I’ve decided to start reposting some of my favourite snaps from the past few years, ranging from the embarrassing, to the raw, back to the over saturated and cringey to the ones I love for no explainable reason.

Never stop doing what you love.

Ewok

I had the pleasure of interviewing and photographing one of Durban’s legends for a Stellies based literary site.

I am rather pleased with the article and hope that you’ll give it a read to learn more about 031’s very own Mr Cool and what talent this city has to offer.

At the end of the day, physically meeting Ewok was what made me understand his talent and inspirations. The standard questions that you can find answers to in any interview, will never convey Ewok as a whole, composite person and getting to know him, if even for two hours, in the moments of uncontrolled laughter or tequila drinking, told me more about this human than the actual prepared interview ever could. It was a refreshing experience to sit and discover a regular person using all his passion to do extraordinary things. At the end of the day, that is all that you truly need to know and understand about Iain Ewok Robinson in order to be inspired by him. The rest is just noise.

Ya’ll can read the FULL story right hurr.

Been Trill

Just what you wanted to start your day, right? A million pics of me staring dead-pan into the camera. Well don’t say I don’t spoil you now!

So the actual point of this post is that we have another aspiring photographer in the house and that is my very own 18 year old brother who put these pics together for me a little while back.

Sure it’s been years of bribing baby brother into playing my photographer for blogs and profile pics alike, but it’s good to see he’s learnt a thing or two. I love these images and can’t wait to see what he does without me art directing the crap out of everything. Mind you we’ve come a long way since I was donning my grade 11 dance dress with Chuck Taylors, feeling punk as fvck and whining “Steven all you have to do is stand right here and push the button at the top."

Thanks Stevie Kelly – Next Terry Richardson all up in this!

(Minus the creep factor.)

Yard Zine

image

Where do I get my daily dose of coolness? From the boys at Yard Zine of course!

Yard is a minimalistic Society/ Culture website that will soon launch their ‘zines in the 031, early next year. The site focuses on  art & design, and the team behind the Cool hope to venture out into a menswear line one day.

image

Yard is my latest obsession because I get a little education on fashion and design in my Facebook newsfeed every day.

These guys have also been involved in a few low-brow events in the city, including Threads that was recently held at the Factory Cafe.

Yard has recently started a section called On Location, where the team willl be visiting some people who they rate will interest you, dear readers, and aims to give us some insight into how they are staying creative within their local community. While this feature will show off local Durbanites, it will also expose some of the creatives living abroad in London.

You can remain on point by checking out their website and having a like at their Facebook page.

Threads: Art On Apparel

So my beloved Mac, crashed and burned, leaving me to blog and edit from some rather obscure sources.

Not going to lie, I have done some shady stuff lately for Lightroom.

This is why, two weeks after the event happened, I am letting you good people, know how it went.

I’m talking about the Threads: Art on Apparel exhibition that went down at the Factory Cafe -organised by Onlypeople and Yard Zine.

It was the usual recipe for a successful jam at TFC. Food, drinks, chunes and art. The twist was the the art and photography were displayed on sweaters, shirts and New Balance sneakers up for sale and silent auction.

I’ll let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

The Paper Planes

The last thing you expect whilst lazing at home on an overcast Sunday afternoon, is for a band of cool kids to rock up at your door and ask you to do an impromptu photoshoot for them.

The Paper Planes consists of Steve Murray on bass, Rudi Van Der Zee on drums,Nick Pitman on electric guitar and Badyn Holesgrove on acoustic guitar and lead vocals.

In their own words, The Paper Planes are “A collection of talented muzos who recently got together to take the acoustic music of Badyn Holesgrove and turn it into a hard hitting indie/blues rock sound guaranteed to get some takkies squeaking.”

For now, these guys are a well kept, up and coming secret. So my trendy young things who want to be ahead of the crowd, check these guys out on the Facebook for upcoming gigs and hardcore rock ‘n roll pics of Badyn grabbing his crotch and the illusive Long Sock Steve.
